How to measure a closet so the cut list is right

A field method for measuring reach-ins and walk-ins: multiple heights, out-of-plumb walls, the 95" build height, door swing, toe kick, and where fillers go.

Every bad closet install traces back to the site visit — to fifteen minutes with a tape, where somebody wrote one number down for a wall that has three.

The cut list is arithmetic. It is exactly as good as what you feed it. So the goal on site is not to measure the room; it is to measure the room in a way that survives being turned into panels.

Walls are never square and never plumb

Start from that. A closet is usually the least-cared-about framing in the house. The back wall bows, the side walls lean, and the drywall got a heavier coat of mud at the bottom than at the top.

So no dimension in a closet is a single number. Every one is a range, and you want the tight end of it.

  • Measure the opening width at three heights: near the floor, at about waist height, and up near where the cabinet will top out. Write down all three. Build to the smallest.
  • Measure the depth at both ends of the back wall, not just in the middle.
  • Measure the ceiling height at both ends of every wall a run will stand against. Floors slope. Ceilings drop.
  • On a rectangular closet, measure both floor diagonals. Equal diagonals mean the room is square. Unequal ones tell you the corner is going to fight you, before you have cut anything.

Write the smallest reading in each set as the working number, and keep the others. The spread between largest and smallest is what your fillers have to absorb, and you want its size before you leave.

A closet dimension is not a number. It is a smallest number and a spread.

Reach-ins: measure to the jamb, then measure the opening

Two different widths matter in a reach-in and they are not the same width.

The inside width is wall to wall inside the closet, at three heights. That is what the run is built to.

The opening width is the clear space between the door jambs. That is what the panels have to pass through on install day, and what a drawer has to clear when it is pulled. A drawer bank sitting outside the door opening is a drawer bank nobody can open. Draw the opening on the plan, not just the closet.

Depth is measured from the back wall to the inside face of the jamb — not to the face of the casing. Then account for the door itself. A bifold or a bypass eats depth on the inside of the opening with its track and its panels, and that stolen depth sits exactly where you wanted a drawer front to travel. Note which way the door swings on the plan while you are standing in front of it.

Walk-ins: measure every wall and where you stand

A walk-in is a polygon. Measure every wall segment individually, and put the door on the right wall on your sketch. Do not assume the room closes into a neat rectangle — go around, wall by wall, and check that the plan actually closes.

The thing people forget in a walk-in is standing room. A wall of cabinetry does not just have to fit; the customer has to open a drawer while standing in front of it, with the drawer, their body and the opposite run all in the same corridor. Two facing 16" runs take 32" out of the room before anybody has walked in.

Be careful with the door wall. A run there can be legal on the plan and useless in practice because the door lands on it.

The 95" build height

Reach-ins are built to 95", not 108". That is the standard height ClosetRight starts every job at, and it is a number worth understanding rather than overriding by habit.

The point of stopping below the ceiling is that the ceiling is not a reference surface. It is not flat, it is not level, and it is often the worst plane in the room. Scribing a finished top panel to a wavy ceiling is slow, it looks like what it is, and it buys you a top shelf nobody can reach anyway.

Headroom also gives you somewhere to put the error. If the room is 1/2" taller at one end than the other — and it usually is — that difference lands in open air instead of in a gap along the top of your cabinetry.

If there is a soffit, a bulkhead or a duct drop, measure to the bottom of it and treat that as the ceiling for the wall it crosses. Measure where it starts and stops along the wall too.

The toe kick and the floor

The toe kick is 3 1/2" high, recessed 5/8". It is where the floor's problems go to die.

Find the high point of the floor along each run before you set anything. The base gets levelled off that high point and shimmed up everywhere else — you shim up, never cut down, because cutting down only hands the problem to the next high point along the run. A base that reads level is what makes every shelf above it read level, and a shelf visibly out of level is the first thing a customer notices.

Two things to check while you are down there:

  • Baseboard. If baseboard runs behind where the cabinetry lands, either it comes off or the run stands proud of the wall by its thickness. Decide on site, and write down which.
  • Floor covering. Note whether the finished floor is in yet, and whether it is carpet. Carpet and pad under a toe kick is a different height than bare subfloor, and it compresses.

Out-of-plumb walls, scribe and filler

This is what all the multi-height measuring was for. Once you know a wall leans 3/8" over the height of the run, you know you need a filler strip on that end, and roughly how wide.

The filler strip is the honest answer to a bad wall: a strip of the same material fastened to the end panel of the run, cut generously and scribed to the wall on site. The run itself stays square and plumb — every panel in it cuts as a rectangle — and one sacrificial strip takes all the irregularity.

Scribing the finished end panel itself is worth avoiding wherever you can. Melamine chips when you cut it on site, the raw core shows at the edge, and you have turned a finished panel into a field repair.

In ClosetRight the filler width is not a number somebody types. It comes from the live gap between the run and the wall on the drawing, so the strip on the cut list is the strip the drawing shows, and it gets scribed down from there.

Write it down at the precision you cut to

Measure to 1/16". That is what a tape reads. If the shop cuts to 1/8", set the whole job to 1/8" so every drawing and every cut list rounds the same way — do not let one document say 22 5/16" while another says 22 1/4".

What you must not do is round in the field. A wall that measured 78 13/16" is not 78 3/4" and it is certainly not 79". Every rounding you do standing in the closet with a tape becomes a gap the installer has to explain.

One last thing before you leave: photograph each wall. Not as a substitute for the numbers — as the thing you check them against when one looks wrong the night before the cut.

Measure it once, properly, and the room only has to be drawn once too.
